Understanding the User
Dyslexia is a learning disorder that affects ability to read, spell, write and speak. Kids who have it are often smart and hardworking but they have trouble connecting the letters they see to the sound those letters make
Brief
Develop an innovative and engaging smart toy specifically designed to support the educational and cognitive needs of dyslexic children aged 3 to 6. The goal is to create a playful, interactive, and multisensory device that fosters a positive learning experience while addressing common challenges associated with dyslexia.
Ideation
The design of the cube began with the idea of turning learning into a playful, hands-on experience for children. Inspired by the familiar Rubik’s Cube, we reimagined it as an interactive educational tool with screens and audio feedback, making it engaging and accessible especially for children with learning differences. The form remains tactile and intuitive, encouraging exploration through play.
Process
The prototyping process started with simple PVC and thermocol mockups to explore form and usability, followed by integrating Arduino with mini LCD screens to test interactive features and display functionality.
3D CAD Model
The 3D CAD model was developed to refine the cube’s proportions, internal component placement, and hinge mechanisms, ensuring both aesthetics and functionality. It also helped simulate screen layouts and wiring feasibility before physical prototyping.
Prototyping
The final prototype was 3D printed using ABS material for its durability and strength, ideal for a kid friendly product. This allowed us to test the cube’s tactile feel, assembly of moving parts, and integration of electronic components like screens and speakers.
